Seriously. But it doesn’t really work like that. Built in the early 1920’s, this massive hospital has seen a lot. The structure itself is still quite solid. They were very friendly, and their work was actually quite good. It is clearly very old, and hardly ever used. I have no idea. There it is. We get drunk at our New Year’s Eve parties. It is very reminiscent of the nearby Gillette Castle. But it does actually go back a ways. It really is that awesome. Pardon my french, but fuck cancer. They honestly reminded me a lot of Rhode Island’s Fort Wetherill in their construction and look. That’s how much there is to see here. But much like Alcatraz before it: as a tourist attraction. And I’m okay with this. Bannerman Castle is kind of a local legend in these parts. I don’t like it when they’re literally just sitting right off the side of the road. Taking a small boat through the roaring Hudson River, the castle looms like a mythical giant in the distance. Cool for us, I guess. This 18th-century church was almost washed away in the 70s when the council set about flooding the parish of Empingham to meet the demands of South East England's growing population. Follow the old path under the highway, and you’ll find the tower. But nothing ever does. With every year that passes, somebody of importance almost always says that it will be Hearthstone’s final year. I had to lean on the railing the entire way up. As part of a venture to build a new park for the area, picnic tables and other amenities sprouted up alongside the tower over the years. The backroom also has two ventilation shafts leading to the outside. Like so many of her fellow abandoned military bases, the Cohasset Annex is completely legal to visit and sits in the middle of a large state park. And so, in the final days of Fall 2020, we made our journey out to the abandoned remains of Camp Nepaug. There are also several small buildings situated in a orderly fashion alongside the tunnels. It’s just you never know what you are going to find in the deepest/darkest places of the world. But enough of the negativity. But some things never really change. And unfortunately, some of the cooler aspects of this place have been demolished over the years. It can be quite frightening, and yet also very enlightening. The fort was a training post during the Civil War and trained some of the troops that would later comprise the famed 20 th Maine infantry regiment. It may be one of the most picturesque parts of New England, but it has its share of secrets. Just please be safe. Perhaps the most physically impressive fortress in New England, Fort Knox is a sprawling granite installation in Prospect, ME, that was built between 1844 and 1869 to defend the Penobscot River. Located on Pollepel Island, smack dab in the middle of the roaring Hudson River, the castle was first built in 1901 by industrialist Francis Bannerman IV. But once the United States entered the Korean War several years later, the base was once again called into action. Not with mice. We like to think things will be different this time around. The tunnels were apart of their training rifle range, used for traveling up and down the range without danger. But most of all, I know that these people find just as much wonder and enjoyment out of this hobby as Lassie and myself. However, all of her old bunkers have either been filled in, demolished, or locked up after a series of alleged murders several years ago. This is Hearthstone Castle, a true legend in these parts. And there it is. The church was rebuilt in 1783. Not only was it our eight year anniversary together, but we finally made it to a place that has haunted us for years. But besides the history, the area is filled with many ghostly locations. The fort was abandoned in 1824 and then dynamited in 1898 to make way for Fort Wetherill. Hanson This abandoned tuberculosis hospital, built in 1916 and shuttered in 1992, is one of many gorgeous Massachusetts medical facilities that closed their doors in … It’s an eerie feeling, almost as if you’re expecting something to happen. With large cells designed for “self reflection” during incarceration, the facility was eventually plagued by overcrowding during the early 20th century. It looks like it could collapse at any moment. Eventually, this area of refuge outlived her purpose. And you wonder what this place must’ve looked like way back when. Due to a fatal flaw in her design, she was deemed unfit for use by the military and eventually retired. Not too hot. They congregate on the ceiling and upper walls of the tunnels in large hives. But when complications with the local wetlands arose, the prison was forced to close down. And, fortunately enough for you hikers out there, most of these buildings are marked on the map at the park’s Visitor Center. Honestly, the castle is damn near awe-inspiring. There may not be too much to see, but its nice to just be outdoors and do some exploring. For the next few years, the land became apart of the rapidly developing air defense network of the American homeland. There are a lot of tight spots between the walls, the vegetation, and the debris. When we plot an investigation, it is usually to go explore something like a big abandoned building. While it was abandoned for a time, it’s now called the smallest nation is the world, being named the Principality Sealand since 1967. You have to stride through the thick underbrush to get to it. It was simply decommissioned, and left behind. It was sad to think that this was the first, and will probably be the last time that I see the castle. And it’s all completely legal to visit.
